Deb’s Inspiration
I fell in love with the ocean when I was a little girl, and have always loved spending time at the beach. I tend to surround myself with “beachy” things. I found the vintage crab image to be so charming, and thought he deserved to be on a special pillow. I adore linen, so it seemed like the obvious choice.
How she made it
The image was transferred to white linen, and then appliqued onto a square of gorgeous aqua linen. It has a zipper closure in the bottom. The linen that I use is a high quality decorator’s linen.
Custom Orders
The biggest part of my business is custom orders. Only rarely does someone purchase the exact item from the listing…I usually end up making a different size/color/image to fit my customers’ unique decor. Sometimes a customer will ask for multiples of an item…I just shipped a custom order for four starfish pillows this week, and another order for two of these crab pillows in an 18″ size. I think what I enjoy most about the custom listings is that they give me fresh new ideas…I don’t have to rely on just my own imagination.

Amy’s Inspiration
First of all I am a beach bum. There is no other place I would rather be. It soothes my soul to be at the water’s edge.
I was inspired to make the pillow from my experience as a child. We rented an old, sea-worn, beach house on Cape Cod. I remember arriving and having to make up the beds. They had these old mattresses made with pinstripe, ticking fabric on them. I have always had a warm, comforting feeling about striped ticking fabric. It means “you’ve arrived”, “you’re home” to me. So I have created the crab striped pillow and also have a red lobster on blue ticking that has sold. Last summer I also did 3 pillow designs on green ticking fabric with seahorses, star fish and sand dollars in a light blue. I plan to do more this summer.
How she made it
The pillows are constructed of 100% cotton ticking fabric and printed by hand by stamping them with block print designs that I have created. Once I have cut the block, I can print it on almost anything. I have done tea towels, backpacks and other pillows with a block printed repeat on natural canvas.
I cut the design into a rubber pad and mount it to a Plexiglas base. I then ink it with a roller using water based inks and press it down onto the fabric just like a stamp.
